The Northern Atlantic and Pacific tropical storm season is again upon us, and while the number of storms and actual impact on lives and value may be a gamble, the effect on broadcasting meteorologists and programming setup is almost a given – there will be activity that needs to be covered quickly, accurately, and increasingly important, seamlessly with other news programming. Meteorologists often have to put on a poker face to hide their excitement over the really interesting, very challenging task of continuous broadcasting coverage with wall-to-wall data and statistics that need to be turned into information and value for viewers and the broadcasters themselves.
In a fast-moving, ever-changing weather picture, having access to fast, flexible and constantly updated content rich graphics that are ready for all broadcast platforms and social media output is crucial. And never is this more true than when a tropical system or multiple systems are churning somewhere out in the waters and the news director needs updates on-set, online and on-the-go, for the entire multi-platform audience.
Viewers are also getting more weather savvy and the expectations for what is presented, as well as the frequency at which the information is updated, is steadily increasing. Keeping viewers tuned to your channel brand and your network is very hard. This is where a weather data workflow that allows you to be the disruptor is crucial. At ChyronHego, highly efficient, data- driven graphics creation is our expertise. Not only do we provide the systems and the graphics solutions, we also have decades of experience in analyzing data, comparing data providers and data products, and working as the client’s advisor to ensure the most informative weather programming.
This year’s Atlantic tropical season is forecasted (by both the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecast – ECMWF, and the US National Hurricane Center – NHC) to be slightly more active than normal. This will undoubtedly bring opportunities and challenges to broadcasters. What should not be a challenge is making sure that the weather content workflow has access to the best data, independent of the source or provider.
At ChyronHego, we believe that more data, more data sources, and more flexibility in the data provision ultimately gives broadcasters a lower total cost of ownership but still gives the on-air meteorologists and the viewers higher value. With ChyronHego’s Metacast solution, data source agnosticism has been our backbone for almost 25 years. That is what we do.
Until next time, stay weather aware and weather prepared!
